DWU Shoots 289 in GPAC Men's Golf Qualifer #1
The Dakota Wesleyan University enjoyed its home-course advantage during Saturday's first Great Plains Athletic Conference Men's Golf Qualifier at Wild Oak Golf Course in Mitchell. The Tigers posted a 12-shot victory, junior Nick Gates tied for the individual lead, and the team tied the school record for lowest team score with a 289.

Despite less-than-ideal conditions, all five DWU golfers flirted with par all morning and all five finished in the top 10 individually. Gates, a Mitchell native, shot a 2-under-par 70 (36-34) to lead DWU and finish tied for first place overall. Senior Brett Abbotts, sophomore Tyler Evenson and freshman Andrew Farrand all tied for third place individually with 1-over-par 73s to give the Tigers their team score of 289. Sophomore Chris Pritchard shot a 3-over-par 75, which tied him for 10th place overall.

The Tigers teed off first with the University of Sioux Falls, and though the team battled some cold temperatures and rain, conditions worsened throughout the day and made things tough on the rest of the GPAC.

Nebraska Wesleyan (301) edged Hastings College (302) for second place, and both teams will try to make up the double-digit deficit in the other three GPAC Qualifier meets. Northwestern College (305) finished fourth and USF (308) rounded out the top five. Morningside College (309) was sixth, Dordt College (314) was seventh, Briar Cliff University (316) was eighth, Midland Lutheran College (319) was ninth, Doane College (327) finished 10th and Concordia University (357) took 11th place.

Nebraska Wesleyan's E.J. Hamilton equaled Gates' 70 to tie for the individual lead. Northwestern's Luke Vermeer and Justin Pannkuk each shot a 73 to tie the three Tiger golfers for third place. Hastings' Andy Wiengardt and USF's Matt Bertsch both shot 74s to tie for eighth, and NWU's Nate Jaeger, Hastings' Will Logdson, Dordt's Jared Rempel and Doane's Marcus Anderson each shot a 75 to land in a five-way tie with Pritchard for 10th place.

The second GPAC Qualifier will be hosted by Doane College at Wilderness Ridge on Sept. 18.
