Doane College was the recipient of this year’s Buffalo Funds Five Star Champions of Character Award at last week'sNAIA Indoor Track & Field Championship in Johnson City, Tennessee. The award is selected annually at the end of each sports season by the Coaches Association Officers. All NAIA teams are eligible for the team award. Teams are nominated by their institution and the winner receives an award at the National Championship.

Award winners are selected based upon their documented display of exemplary character and sportsmanship on the field, on campus and in the community. Specifically, the teams must fulfill the Core Character Values of respect, responsibility, integrity, servant leadership and sportsmanship.

Asked why character is a vital part of the team chemistry and how it helps the team perform, Doane Head Coach Ed Fye said that it is important for each student-athlete to feel part of the team.

“We build team chemistry by stressing 'team'. We do not run our program as a men’s or women’s team. We have one team, Doane College Track & Field. We score all our meets, even conference and nationals as a combined score. Our coaches stress to each member that they can contribute to the team whether it is by scoring points, cheering and supporting teammates or by being a role model.”

Doane athletes were also asked why it is important to incorporate character into their team. Doane seniors Paulvince Obuon and Meagan Bauer provided statements for the committee.

Obuon said it is important for the team members to build their own individual character through their involvement and interaction with the track and field program.

“Character takes us further than the practice and competition fields. It molds us as individuals to be responsible citizens, brothers, sisters and future fathers and mothers. There are many benefits that have been a result of character in our team. The sense of responsibility and the display of sportsmanship stand out. Doane College athletes always show respect for their opponents even though they may not always receive it back from some of their rivals.”

Bauer says there are six character traits that keep the team together as one team instead of several individuals.

“Trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, citizenship and compassion are the foundation of our team’s strengths. These selfless characteristics help to create a bond between all of the athletes which allows us to strive for and achieve success. Being a team is extremely important to us. All of the athletes make it a point to stay until the final event of the meet, to cheer and support their teammates.”

The Doane Track & Field program has a 92-percent graduation rate over the past five years while also having 40 NAIA Scholar-Athletes. In 2007, three former Doane athletes were inducted into the NAIA Hall-of-Fame and in May 2008 another athlete will be honored. The characteristics learned from being a Tiger athlete and a member of the program is continued on after graduation by many former athletes.
