Briar Cliff's Kane Kuehl The Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) and Hauff Mid-America Sports are proud to announce the following football players-of-the-week for games played on Saturday, October 20, 2007. Hauff Mid-America Sports is the presenting sponsor of the 2007-2008 GPAC Players-of-the-Week and Players and Coaches-of-the-Year awards program.
Hauff Mid-America Sports/GPAC Football Players-of-the-Week
Co-Offense –JaMaine Lewis, Concordia – Running Back Ian Gilworth, Morningside - Quarterback Concordia running back JaMaine Lewis and Morningside quarterback Ian Gilworth are this week’s GPAC/Hauff Mid-America Sports Football Co-Offensive Players-of-the-Week. The two combined for what has to be some of the most impressive offensive numbers in the GPAC in quite some time. Lewis, a 5-11 senior from St. Louis, Missouri, ran for 261 yards on 31 carries and scored four touchdowns as Concordia won at Dakota Wesleyan 31-24. For the day he had no fumbles and averaged 8.4 yards per carry. Lewis became the first GPAC rusher to top the 1000 yard mark this season (now at 1146 yards) and leads the league with 143.2 yards per game. The Bulldogs improved to 4-4 with the win and will host top-ranked Sioux Falls next Saturday at 1PM. Gilworth, a 6-2 junior from Unionville, Missouri, completed 23-28 pass attempts for 361 yards and five touchdowns in Morningside’s 52-3 win over Dana. On the ground he ran for 16 yards and two more scores. Gilworth played a role in all of Morningside’s seven touchdowns on the day. In the second half he was 7-7 passing. 16th ranked Morningside improved to 6-2 with the win and will play at Midland Lutheran next Saturday at 1PM.
Defense – Brandon Minch, Nebraska Wesleyan – Defensive Lineman
Nebraska Wesleyan defensive lineman Brandon Minch is this week’s GPAC/Hauff Mid-America Sports Football Defensive Player-of-the-Week. Minch, a 6-1 senior from Elmwood, Nebraska, recorded four sacks and six solo tackles (32 tackle for loss yards) in the Prairie Wolves home win against Hastings 14-0. Two of his sacks came on third down plays and helped force the Broncos into eight punts on the day. He also forced a fumble and led a defense that recorded six sacks, five pass break ups, and three interceptions. Nebraska Wesleyan, now 4-3, will play at Briar Cliff this Saturday in a 1PM game. Briar Cliff punter Kane Kuehl is this week’s GPAC/Hauff Mid-America Sports Special Teams Football Players-of-the-Week. Kuehl, a 5-11 sophomore from Sioux City, Iowa, averaged 52 yards per punt as he punted seven times for 364 yards at Doane on Saturday. His long of the day was an 81 yard kick that is just two yards shy of the GPAC record of 83 yards (set earlier this year by two players). Two of his punts were inside the 20 yard line.
