The Dakota Wesleyan University women’s golf team will try to defend its Great Plains Athletic Conference title this week when they take part in the 2007 GPAC Women’s Golf Championships on Thursday and Friday (Oct. 11-12) at Lincoln, Neb. The GPAC Championships is a 36-hole tournament held at Wilderness Ridge Golf Course in Lincoln, Neb, hosted by Doane College.

DWU is the five-time defending GPAC Women’s Golf Champion.

At the GPAC Preview meet held on Sept. 11 at Wilderness Ridge in Lincoln, three teams were within three strokes of the title. Dakota Wesleyan had a team score of 348 to win the team title with Sioux Falls right behind at 349. Hastings was only one stroke behind them with a score of 350. Midland Lutheran finished fourth with a 359, and they had the individual champion in Kate Becker.

Sioux Falls has defeated Dakota Wesleyan twice in meets this season, the only two times that the Tigers have not won the team title at a tournament.

Individually, several players are expected to be in contention for medalist honors. Kate Becker from Midland Lutheran won the GPAC Preview with a score of 80. Brittnay Hofer from Sioux Falls was right behind at 81, and she has set the Sioux Falls school record for low score already this season.

Cassidy Potter from Dakota Wesleyan placed third at the preview meet and she has already tied the DWU school record for low score this season. Dakota Wesleyan’s No. 1 golfer, Kelli Baseley, earned All-GPAC in 2006 and has won one tournament this season.

Morningside golfers Jenny Bowen and Kristi Tighe both earned All-GPAC last season by placing in the top 10 at the 2006 GPAC Tournament. Jenny Andrew from Hastings placed fourth in 2006 at the GPAC Championships and at the 2007 GPAC Preview meet. Michaela Carew from Briar Cliff also is a returning All-GPAC performer and she tied for sixth at Wilderness Ridge earlier this fall.

The 2007 GPAC Championships, featuring 11 teams, will begin at 9 a.m. on Thursday morning. All players will tee off at the No.1 tee box on both days. Three teams will be paired together each day.

Day two pairings will be based on results from Thursday’s competition with the top three teams playing in the final grouping. Play will begin at 9 a.m. on Friday morning.
