Two national champions from Doane College were crowned on Friday afternoon at the NAIA Track & Field Championships in Fresno, California, while the GPAC added 14 All-American honors.

The Doane College men enter Saturday’s action sitting in second place with 31 points after placing in five events on Friday.

Highlighting the afternoon on the men’s side was the Tiger’s Adam Landerfield blazing to a national title in the 110 meter hurdles. Landerfield ran a time of 14.17, a personal best by .23 seconds. Chase Manstedt, Midland Lutheran, placed fifth in the event with a time of 14.73.

The Doane men’s 3200 meter relay team set a school record on their way to a second place finish. Dave Craven, Doane, picked up a third place finish in the high jump with a mark of 6-09.75, a personal best.

Concordia notched three All-Americans in the 5000 meter race walk. Chris Tegtmeier took third, Joe Ripke was fourth and Nathan Dreher finished sixth.

In the 100 meter dash, Doane’s D’Artagnan Dai’re finished fifth with a time of 10.64. Maurice Smith finished fifth in the long jump for the Tigers with a mark of 23-04. Scott VanCura, Hastings, picked up his second Top 6 finish of the meet by bring home fifth place in the shot put with a throw of 55-11.25.

On the women’s side, Doane’s Katie Kosmos was victorious in the heptathlon. She finished with 5,061 points. Kosmos entered the day in first place, dropped to third place after a seventh place finish in the long jump and regained a slim lead after a second place finish in the javelin. She clinched the title by winning the 800 meter run in a time of 2:23.50.

The Broncos’ Renee Faimon brought home third place in the triple jump with a mark of 39-01.75. Teammate Tawna Trail finished fourth in the discus, giving her two All-American honors at this year’s meet.

The Doane 3200 meter relay team finished fourth by re-establishing the school record in a time of 9:10.88. They had broken the previous record on Thursday.

What more can the GPAC do on Saturday. Well, there are 25 national championships to be decided. Jen Kempers, Dordt, will defend her national title in the 3000 meter steeplechase. She cruised through the trials, leading her heat until the final 100 meters in which she was already guaranteed to advance to the finals. Trail (Hastings) will attempt to pick up her third All-American honor in the shot put while VanCura (Hastings) looks to do the trick in the discus. Doane will have the men’s 4x100 and 4x400 teams in action and we could see another heated contest between the Tigers and Broncos in the 4x400 as both teams advanced to the finals.
