Nine All-American honors were claimed by Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) schools on Thursday’s opening action of the NAIA Track & Field Championships. This year’s championships are being held at Fresno Pacific University in California.

Two runner-up finishes were brought home in the 4:00 p.m. field events. Vanessa Warzacha, Morningside, took second in the women’s javelin while Michelle Anderson, Concordia, was second in the women’s pole vault.

Warzacha finished with a throw of 148-10 and led the event until Liz Gleadle, Univ. of British Columbia, launched a throw of 161-08 on her last attempt.

Anderson posted a vault of 12-03.50. She had the best tie-breaker among the five vaulters that also posted the same height. Fellow GPAC-ers Kami Wettlaufer, Midland Lutheran, and Meagan Bauer, Doane, joined Anderson as All-Americans. Wettlaufer took fourth while Bauer was sixth.

Hastings brought home a pair of third place finishes in the hammer throws. Tawna Trail finished with a mark of 175-01 on the women’s side while Scott VanCura threw 185-07 on the men’s side.

In the men’s javelin, Andrew Ortmeier of Northwestern placed fourth with a throw of 207-07 while Morningside’s Brad South posted a mark of 204-07 to finish fifth.

Luka Thor of Concordia wrapped up the evening by taking sixth place in the 10,000 meter run. He clocked a time of 31:55.27.

Several athletes also advanced from the trial events on Thursday afternoon. Thirteen events will wrap up on Friday as the GPAC looks to bring home a few more All-American honors and possibly a couple of individual national titles.
