![]() Doane Track Athletes Honored by NAIA
Three former Doane College athletes were inducted into the NAIA Hall of Fame on May 23, 2007. The Class of 2007 includes John Baumann (’90), Greg Ray (’00), and David Symonsbergen (’93). Their induction will take place in Fresno, California, at the NAIA Outdoor Track and Field National Championships.
John Baumann was a 10-time All-American for the Tigers in the shot put and discus. He was a four-time outdoor shot put All-American. He earned All-American honors for the indoor shot put and discus three times. Baumann was a four-time Nebraska Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (NIAC) champion in the indoor and outdoor shot put as well as the discus. He was also a four-time District 11 champion in the shot put and three-time District 11 champion in the discus. He currently resides in Stillwater, Oklahoma. Greg Ray was a 10-time All-American in short distance events. He was an Indoor All-American in the 200 meter dash four times. He set the school record in 1997 for the 200 meter dash with a time of 0:21.63. He was the NAIA indoor 200 meter champion in 1998 and 2000. During the outdoor season, Ray claimed All-American honors in the 100 meter dash and with the 4x100 meter relay team in 1997 and 1998. The 4x100 meter relay team won the national championship in 1997 and 1998. Also in 1998, he was an All-American in the 200 meter dash. In 2000, he earned All-American honors with the 4x100 meter relay team. He holds two outdoor record, the 200 meter dash set in 1999 with a time of 0:21.21 and the 4x100 relay set a time of 0:40.50 in 1997. Ray resides in Grand Island.
David Symonsbergen was an eight-time All-American. During the indoor season, he earned All-American honors with the 4x880 yard relay team (’90), the distance medley relay team (’90), in the 1000 meter run (’91, ’92, ’93) and the 800 meter run (’92). He earned National Championships in the 1000 meter run (’93) and with the distance medley relay team (’90). Symonsbergen holds the school record in the 800 meter run with a time of 1:51.21 and the mile run with a time of 4:09.82, both set in 1992. He was an outdoor All-American in 1991 and 1992 in the 800 meter run. He is a member of two relay team school records. In 1990, the distance medley relay set a mark of 10:01.28 and in 1991 the 4x800 relay team set a time of 7:33.50. Symonsbergen resides in Lincoln. Picture from Rick Schmuecker at Doane |
