Under cloud free skies Doane’s women and Nebraska Wesleyan’s men claimed team titles at the 2007 Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday in at Bulldog Stadium in Seward, Neb
. The Doane women scored 259 points and en route to their seventh straight outdoor conference title in the GPAC. Nebraska Wesleyan was second with 137 points, while Concordia was third with 97. In a tightly contested race on the men’s side, Doane and Nebraska Wesleyan traded the lead throughout the meet before Nebraska Wesleyan edged Doane, 213.5 to 212 to claim their 19th consecutive title dating back to the NIAC days. Hastings finished third with 130.5 points. Going into the final event of the evening, the 4x400-meter relay, the Prairie Wolves held a three and a half point advantage. With a win in the final event and Nebraska Wesleyan finishing no higher than third the Tigers could have pulled off the upset. But in a photo finish, Hastings College edged out Doane. Nebraska Wesleyan was third in the event.
For the second consecutive year Doane’s Katie Kosmos was named the GPAC/Hauff Mid-America Women’s Athlete-of-the-Year after scoring 36 points in the meet. On the men’s side Scot VanCura from Hastings claims Athlete-of-the-Year honors after totaling 26 points in the meet. The outstanding performances-of-the-meet and coaches-of-the-year will be named in the next week. Concordia University, Nebraska was the host of the 2007 GPAC Track and Field Championships at Bulldog Stadium in Seward, Neb. The meet was originally scheduled to take place on Saturday, May 5, but was rescheduled to due severe weather. GPAC Meet Records Set on Friday:
