Dordt's Briana Vander Woude scored a Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) record 3652 points on Friday to win the Pentathon at Doane College on day one of the 2013 GPAC Indoor Track and Field Championships. Vander Woude, last year's GPAC Indoor Athlete-of-the-Year, broke Jillian Ourada from Doane's record of 3437 points set in 2011.
Ourada placed second this year with 3621 points over five events. The five events that are scored in the pentathlon are the 55 hurdles, high jump, shot put, long jump, and the 800 meters.
Vander Woude ran a time of 8.23 in the 55 hurdles, jumped 5-05 in the high jump, posted a shot put mark of 37-11.25, a jump of 17-07.5 in the long jump, and concluded the mulit-events with a clocking of 2:35.85 in the 800 meters. Vander Woude picks up ten points in the team scoring for the Dordt women for her performance on Friday at Fuhrer Fieldhouse.
The men's heptathlon is led by Rob Keeney of Doane with 3067 points. The men completed the 55 meters, long jump, shot put, and high jump today. On Saturday morning the heptathlon will conclude at Doane for the men with the 55 hurdles, pole vault, and the 1000 meters. Kale Wolken from Doane is in second place with 3008 points.
Keeney clocked a time of 6.77 in the 55 meters, a jump of 22-11.25 in the jong jump, a throw of 41-02.5 in the shot put, and concluded day one with a leap of 6-08 in the high jump. Keeney is the GPAC record holder in the heptathlon scoring 5223 points last year in the GPAC Championships.
Day two in Crete will begin at 9:00 am on Saturday morning. The GPAC Championships will start at 2:00 pm at the Bob Devaney Sports Center on the campus of the University of Nebraska in Lincoln.
