Morningside College's wrestling team will make its first home appearance of the season on Wednesday when the seventh-ranked Mustangs host No. 17 Midland University in a 7 p.m. dual in the Hindman-Hobbs Center.
Both teams are 1-0 in the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) dual meet standings. Two-time defending GPAC champion Morningside has an overall record of 6-4, while Midland will bring a 4-2 dual mark to Sioux City. Morningside holds a 1-0 advantage in the all-time series after it edged the Warriors 22-21 last season in the first-ever dual between the two schools.
Morningside is in its first season under head coach Jake Stevenson, who was a four-time NAIA All-American and the 2007 184 lb. NAIA National Champion when he competed for the Mustangs.
Midland's wrestling program is in its third year of existence. Midland head coach Beau Vest was previously the head coach at Dana College, which was the dominant wrestling program in the GPAC before the college closed its doors following the 2009-10 academic year.
Morningside's lineup includes NAIA's No. 1-ranked 184 pounder in the nation in two-time NAIA All-American Brian Block, a senior from Sibley, Iowa, who has an 11-4 record with two falls this season. Block has climbed to No. 5 on the Mustangs' all-time victory list with 94 career triumphs.
The Mustangs also have a NAIA All-American at 125 lbs., where Kory Kistner, a senior from Sioux City, has a 3-1 record following a banner 2011-12 campaign where he was the NAIA 125 lb. national runner-up.
Chad Morehead, a senior from Akron, Iowa, is ranked 13th at 165 lbs. and is the top winner in the Mustangs' lineup with a 16-7 record with two falls. Nathan Ryan, a freshman from Moville, Iowa, is right behind Morehead on the Mustangs' victory list with a 15-7 record with three falls and is ranked 16th nationally at 133 lbs. Chris Bridgeford, a freshman 197 pounder from Mondamin, Iowa, has a 13-7 record and leads the Mustangs with six falls.
The Mustangs will be without Tyler Kacmarynski, a junior from Spencer, Iowa, who is expected to be sidelined until February with an injury. Kacmarynski has a 19-3 record with three falls and is the nation's fourth-ranked heavyweight.
Midland's highest ranked wrestler is Kolton Kersten, a junior from Logan, Iowa, who has a 23-4 record and is ranked third in the 197 lb. division. The top winner in the Warriors' lineup is Jahsua Marsh, a senior 184 pounder from Brentwood, N.Y., who has a 28-12 record. Marsh, the reigning NAIA 197 lb. National Champion, competed unattached during the 2012 portion of the campaign.
