Northwestern College battled the wind and shot an impressive final round of 305 today to come from behind to claim the 2011-12 Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Men's Golf Championship.   The Red Raiders entered the final 18 holes at Prairie Green in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, twelve strokes back of Nebraska Wesleyan and won the meet and earned a berth in 2012 NAIA National Golf Championship in Salem, Oregon.

Kyle Stanek and Neil Malenke each shot rounds of 75 on the day to pace the Red Raiders.  The two tied for second on the day behind Brandon Thompson from Morningside who led all golfers with a round of 74 (38-36).  Thompson claimed the overall medalist for the year and is the 2011-12 GPAC Men's Golfer-of-the-Year.  The freshman from Totland, Ilse of Wight, England, will also advance to the NAIA National Championships.  Also of note today Dordt's Madison Moss shot a 31 on the front nine at Prairie Green in very windy conditions.

Northwestern's men's golf team is coached by Aaron Aberson, while Todd Sapp is the head coach at Morningside College and will guide Thompson at the NAIA National Championships.

Today's final 18 holes were moved from Mitchell, South Dakota, to Sioux Falls after severe weather caused major damage to the Wild Oak Golf Course late last week.

The NAIA National Men's Golf Championships are in Salem, Oregon, May 22-25 at the Creekside Country Club and will be hosted by the Cascade Collegiate Conference.
