![]() 2010 GPAC Wrestling Championships Morningside College will host the 2010 Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Wrestling Championships on Saturday in the Hindman-Hobbs Center.
Dana College will be the favorite to repeat as GPAC champion. The Vikings won the previous three GPAC tournaments and will have six nationally ranked wrestlers in their lineup. Seven of last year's 10 GPAC individual champions return and four of them are Vikings. The most competitive weight class could be a 141 lb. division that features three nationally ranked competitors. The defending champion is Dana's Adam Manz, who is ranked eighth in the nation. The 141 lb. division also features Dakota Wesleyan University's Jordan Harer, who is ranked fourth in the nation and placed sixth at last year's NAIA National Championships to earn All-America honors, and Morningside College's Drew Smith, who is ranked second in the nation and has already defeated Harer twice this season. Aside from Manz, who has a 13-6 record this season, Dana's other defending GPAC champions are Clayden McKim at 125 lbs., Ryan Tuzon at 165 lbs., and Jon Wilbourne at heavyweight. McKim has a 6-2 record and is ranked ninth in the NAIA. Tuzon, who earned All-America honors with a third place finish at the 2008 NAIA National Championships, has a 12-3 record and is ranked sixth in the nation. Wilbourne was on a foreign exchange trip for Dana's January term and may not be in the Vikings' lineup for the GPAC Championships. Wilbourne, who has a 15-7 record, will wrestle in the 197 lb. division if he competes. The Vikings have two nationally ranked competitors in the 133 lb. division with Aaron Ely and Matthew Jacobson, who are ranked ninth and 12th, respectively. Jacobson has a 19-13 record this season, while Ely will take a 0-0 mark into the tourney. Dana's highest ranked wrestler is Mark Peiffer, who is ranked third at 184 lbs. Peiffer has an 18-1 record and defeated defending NAIA National Champion Christopher Platt of Southern Oregon University by a 6-0 decision earlier this season. Northwestern College has two reigning GPAC champions in Levi Price at 149 lbs. and Nicholas Leither at 197 lbs. Price is ranked eighth in the nation and is the top winner in the Red Raiders' lineup with a 21-7 record. He was an All-American in 2008 after a sixth place finish at the NAIA National Championships. Leither, who finished eighth at last year's NAIA National Championships, has an 18-5 record and is ranked sixth in the nation. Morningside's Joe Lockett was last year's GPAC 184 lb. champion, but has moved up to 197 lbs. this year. Lockett has a 10-3 record and is ranked 12th in the nation. The Mustangs' Smith is the highest ranked wrestler in the tournament with his No. 2 ranking at 141 lbs. Smith is riding a 13-match winning streak and has a 20-5 record. Brian Block, a freshman from Sibley, Iowa, has a 21-4 record with eighth falls to lead the Mustangs in victories and falls. Block is ranked 12th in the nation at 184 lbs. Morningside's Cody Dennis was ranked in the 125 lb. division earlier this season. Dennis has a 4-4 record and was an All-American in 2008 with a sixth place finish at the NAIA National Championships. Dakota Wesleyan's Harer is the only wrestler in the tournament who is a returning 2009 All-American after his sixth place finish in the 141 lb. division at last year's NAIA National Championships. Harer will take an 18-5 record and a No. 4 national ranking into the GPAC Championships. Danny Hucheson has a 15-5 record for the Tigers in the 149 lb. division. Hastings College is led by Jameon Rush, who has the most victories among the competitors in the tournament field with a record of 26-8. Rush is ranked seventh in the nation at 174 lbs. The top winner in the Briar Cliff University lineup is Sammy Johnson, who has an 8-4 record and was last year's 165 lb. GPAC runner-up. The top winner for the University of Sioux Falls is Koln Fink, who has a 14-14 mark in the 157 lb. division, while Clint Whitley has a 12-11 mark at 197 lbs. Concordia will make its first appearance in the GPAC Championships after starting its varsity program this year. The Bulldogs have an all freshman lineup and are led by Brandon Starkey, who has an 18-14 record and was the 149 lb. runner-up at this past Saturday's York College Open.
