![]() Chuck Morrell Leaves Cougar Program After 15 Years From the Sioux Falls Argus Leader - Matt Zimmer
On the field, the University of Sioux Falls football team doesn't lose often - just once in the past four years.
But the two-time defending national champion Cougars suffered two big losses off the field Monday, as assistant head coach/defensive coordinator Chuck Morrell and quarterbacks coach Kurtiss Riggs both resigned from their positions.
Riggs had been considering leaving his part-time position to focus more attention on his full-time gig as head coach of the Indoor Football League's Sioux Falls Storm, which he has held for the past few years, and his decision doesn't come as a major surprise. Neither does Morrell's, really, as his work as the Cougar defensive coordinator has made him a hot coaching commodity across the region. But he has given no indication of what his future plans are and declined to comment on his reason for leaving when contacted Monday. USF athletic director Willie Sanchez said that Morrell wouldn't tell him what his future plans are, either. "The only comment I want to make is that I've enjoyed my 15 years at USF," Morrell said. "It's been a lot of fun. It was a great experience to have the opportunity to work with so many great players and phenomenal coaches." Sanchez suggested that Morrell may decide to take some time off from coaching, but added that he would d be surprised if Morrell didn't get a chance at a higher level eventually. "Chuck told me, ‘There's two things I do well - fly fishing and coaching football'", Sanchez said. "A guy like him, with the success he's had, I think he might be able to name his ticket when he's ready. I'm just excited for him to have the chance to go after new opportunities in his life, whatever they are." The Cougars are expected to move their two other full-time coaches, Jon Anderson and Ryan Grubb, into new roles, with Anderson moving from special teams coordinator/linebackers coach to defensive coordinator, and Ryan Grubb moving from offensive line coach/run game coordinator to offensive coordinator. |
