Among the 24 teams that will be contending for the national title, five teams can consider themselves veterans, appearing 10 or more times: California Baptist (13), Columbia (Mo.) (16), Fresno Pacific (Calif.) (19), Georgetown (Ky.) (14), Lewis-Clark State (Idaho) (10) and Point Loma Nazarene (Calif.) (12). In the volleyball national championship's 30-year history, Fresno Pacific leads all 154 NAIA institutions with 19 appearances. Columbia's 16 trips have all been consecutive, dating back to 1994.
Defending national champion and top-seeded Fresno Pacific (Calif.) will open play Tuesday at 1 p.m. against St. Ambrose (Iowa). The Sunbirds own a 32-0 record and are making a tournament-field leading 19th trip to the national championship. St. Ambrose (35-7) has made five trips to the national championship, but for 12-year head coach Bruce Billingsley, it marks the first appearance since 1999. No. 12 seed Olivet Nazarene (Ill.) (35-8) and Point Loma Nazarene (Calif.) (20-11) are also in Pool A and will face each other on Tuesday at 3:15 p.m. Point Loma Nazarene earned a spot in the quarterfinals last year, but dropped a three-set decision to Concordia (Calif.).
Second-seeded California Baptist (26-5) headlines Pool B and opens play against Mobile (Ala.) (24-11) Tuesday at 1 p.m. The Lancers, who are making their 13th trip to the national championship, advanced to the semifinals a year ago. Eleventh-seeded Vanguard (Calif.) (17-11) and Taylor (Ind.) (35-5) are set to square off Tuesday at 3:15 p.m. Taylor is making its first national championship appearance since 2001.
Pool C contains third-seeded Northwestern (Iowa), 10th-seeded Biola (Calif.), Indiana Tech and Shawnee State (Ohio.) The first day of action pits Indiana Tech (33-8) against Biola at 5:45 p.m. and is capped off with Northwestern (33-2) meeting Shawnee State (31-3). Both Biola and Northwestern advanced to a quarterfinal meeting a year ago and it was Biola who prevailed in straight sets to advance. The Eagles were then upended by Concordia (Calif.) in the semifinals.
Fourth-seeded Concordia (Calif.) (26-7) and Morningside (Iowa) (31-7) open Pool D action on Tuesday at 5:45 p.m. The Eagles, who are making their fifth trip to the national championship, fell in five sets last year in the final match to Fresno Pacific. Morningside, who is appearing in its second-straight national championship, will be playing in its own back yard as the Mustangs call Sioux City home. Ninth-seeded Texas at Brownsville and Bellevue (Neb.) are also placed in Pool D and will meet Tuesday at 8:30 p.m.
Azusa Pacific (Calif.) is seeded fifth and will open up Pool E play against Lewis-Clark State (Idaho) Tuesday at 5:45 p.m. Azusa Pacific (24-8) is making its eighth trip to the national championship, while Lewis-Clark State (24-7) has qualified for a 10th time in the program's history. Eighth-seeded and five-time national championship qualifier College of Idaho (24-2) is set to meet Doane (Neb.) (29-7) Tuesday at 8:30 p.m. The Tigers are back at the national championship for an eighth time.
The final pool contains sixth-seeded Georgetown (Ky.), seventh-seeded Columbia (Mo.), Lee (Tenn.) and Lubbock Christian (Texas). Pool F sets up a rematch from last year's first single elimination match between Georgetown and Columbia, in which Georgetown emerged victorious in five tightly contested matches. Prior to this showdown later in the week, Georgetown (40-2) will first take on Lubbock Christian (27-5) on Tuesday at 1 p.m. Columbia (37-2) is set to meet Lee (33-5) Tuesday at 3:15 p.m.
