GPAC Football Week #10 It's the first Saturday of November for GPAC Football and the second to final week of the year. The NAIA Playoff Picture is still in doubt and many important games are to be played. Week ten marks the final regular season games for Northwestern and Concordia. B. Lynn Fouts breaks down the six matchups this week in the College Fanz GPAC Football Preview.
Nebraska Wesleyan (5-3) at Doane (2-7, 2-6) - No rivalry in the GPAC has as great a history as these nearby schools. This year will see one team take the lead in a series that stands 44-44-6 currently. The Prairie Wolves scored two touchdowns in the final 36 seconds to overcome Midland Lutheran last Saturday, 26-12. Rb Kory Kahlandt rambled for 100 yards last week even after incurring an injury during the action and is closing in on several career records. D-lineman Cameron Kolling is leading the league in tackles for losses and leads a defense that has allowed less than 10 ppg over the past 5 games. Doane has a chance to win 4 games for the third year in a row and none would sit better than one against NWU. Qb Anthony Dunn has crept into 3rd place in GPAC passing yards and Michael Vargas leads the rushing game. The defense, next to last in rushing yards allowed, will need to step up against the run to keep the Tigers in the game. Dana (0-9,0-8) at Midland Lutheran (5-4, 5-3) - Another rivalry game features the battle for the President's Cup between schools separated by just 20 miles. Dana has played defense well at times, (close losses to #18 Northwestern and to Concordia; just 153 yards allowed), and just needs a couple breaks to break into the win column. Qb Jake Harral has enjoyed a decent rookie season with 52% completions and 1250 yards. The Viking rushing game has yet to get untracked though, netting just 35 ypg. The Warriors have dropped a couple heart-breakers this fall, the late loss to NWU included with 4 turnovers spelling doom. For his size, there might not be a tougher player in the GPAC than Qb John Faulkner who took several shots last week, but kept on getting up. Khalid Waters and Darious Bentley form a potent one-two punch at Rb. The defense held NWU in check for over 59 minutes. Look for the Cup to stay in Fremont for another year. #4 Morningside (8-0) at Briar Cliff (3-6, 3-5) - Although this rivalry doesn't draw the attention that the hardwood games do, The Mustangs and Chargers go at it as hard as any teams in the GPAC. Morningside seems to have righted the ship after a close call, running up 78 points last Saturday (their most since 1933). Qb Tim Richard leads all college classifications in pass efficiency and has 25 td tosses to just 4 picks. Jake Peterson leads the NAIA in rushing and the defense allows just 10 ppg. BCU counters with freshman Qb Lehti Tonga who improves week-after-week, now with over 1000 yards passing. Stavhn Leavy and Andre Prohaska have combined for 750 yards on the ground and 8 td's. Defensively, the Chargers, led by league leader in tackles Jarrod Makovicka, rank 3rd in total defense in the GPAC and might be the best the school on the hill has produced. The seventh edition of the River City Classic should be the most competitive yet. #18 Northwestern (7-2) at Dakota Wesleyan (2-6) - The Red Raiders were unable to slow down Sioux Falls last weekend, but will not lack for motivation against the Tigers; the team that kept NWC out of last year's Championship Series. Qb Ryan Morgan has engineered several last minute heroics in his 6 games. Rb Taylor Malm has all-league numbers with almost 800 yards and 14 scores. The defense is led by senior Lb Grant Hegstad and while not as highly ranked as previous Red Raider squads, has been solid when needed. The contest will mark the final home game for senior Tiger duo of Qb Jon Doom and Wr Bubba Slaba, teammates through high school and college. They lead an offense that scored at 28 ppg until being held to 7 in each of the last two outings. The Tiger defense will need to come up big to keep the home team in the game Saturday. Dordt (1-8, 0-8) at #1 Sioux Falls (9-0, 8-0) - The Defenders take on another ranked team (their 4th) and look to build on a strong finish. Josh VanKempen should break 1000 all-purpose yards. Matt Postmus and James Rowenhorst lead the team in tackles. Coach Heavner will need to shore up the rush defense, the GPAC's most porous. Sioux Falls comes in off a win in their rivalry game against Northwestern, but don't expect a let-down. Rushers Ryan Lowmiller and Jake Crowl both produce over 6 yards a carry, while Lorenzo Brown leads the GPAC in total offense. No Cougar defender ranks in the top 50 in tackles; it reflects the way the defense gets on and off the field in a hurry. D-lineman Brandon Koolstra leads the league in sacks with 6. #17 Hastings (7-2, 6-2) at Concordia (3-6) - The Broncos have designs on a nine-win season and an extension of their season. Mackenzie Hemje is wrapping up his senior year leading a defense that has several other solid performers. Pete Botkin and Jake Mueller share third place for most league sacks and Indiana Jones is second in GPAC tackles for loss. The offense has had a revolving door at Qb with injuries to Troy Huebert and Justin Barry, allowing Brett Stine to lead Hastings to victories the last two games. Maurice Mansfield has been the one constant; over 500 yards both rushing and passing with 10 scores. Concordia has tripled its 2008 win total, but is still looking for their first win over a team with a winning record since 2007. The offense has played conservative with a purpose; they've kept turnovers to a minimum (net gain of 5 on the season). Qb Kyle Schmidt should go over 1000 yards passing this week and Darius Smith is running at an almost 5 yards a carry pace. The defense is led in tackles and tackles for loss by Soph Lb Jerrod Fleming and Heath Broekemeier is the team leader in interceptions. The young Bulldogs may have a final surprise in them as they close out the campaign in Seward.
All games at 1PM this week.
