Flanagan Signs
With New Orleans
University of Sioux Falls offensive tackle Shawn Flanagan has signed a three-year free agent contract with the New Orleans Saints following a weekend tryout with the team.

The 6-5, 310-pounder worked in at guard for the Saints during five practices from Friday to Sunday, impressing coaches with his size and athletic ability.

The signing comes just one weekend after Flanagan participated in tryout with the Minnesota Vikings where he was not offered a contract.

"I'm looking forward to the opportunity of competing at the NFL level," Flanagan said. "I am very grateful for the chance I was given here in Sioux Falls to continue my collegiate career."

Flanagan started in all 14 games for the Cougars at left tackle in just one season at Sioux Falls. He helped USF to its third national title in school history on Dec. 20, 2008 when the Cougars defeated Carroll College, 23-7, at Barron Stadium in Rome, Ga.

He anchored the Great Plains Athletic Conference's top rushing attack, which averaged 235.6 rushing yards per game. Protecting quarterback Lorenzo Brown's blindside, Flanagan did not render a sack in 2008.

For his efforts, Flanagan was named to the second team NAIA All-American squad in addition to being a first team All Conference selection.

A native a Pendleton, Ore., Flanagan played originally at the University of Oregon, where he started four games in his first two seasons. He suffered a torn chest muscle and missed an entire year before being declared academically ineligible.

Flanagan transferred to Eastern Oregon, playing one year there and earning First-Team All-Frontier Conference honors before coming to Sioux Falls.

Flanagan will graduate with a degree in political science and history later this month and will report to New Orleans immediately following the ceremony.
