![]() Doane's Virgil Mitchell Doane College ran, threw, and jumped their way to the women's and men's team titles today at the 2009 GPAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Yankton, South Dakota. The GPAC Championships were hosted by Mount Marty College at Williams Field located adjacent to Yankton High School. For the Tigers women it was their 11th straight outdoor title dating back to the Nebraska-Iowa Athletic Conference (NIAC) in 1999. The Doane men won the title for the second straight year, prior to 2008 Nebraska Wesleyan had won or tied for the last 19 league titles dating back to 1989.
Regarding winning both the women's and men's league titles Doane Head Coach Ed Fye stated, "We knew it would be close on both sides, especially on the women's side it would be really tough. Based on where the athletes ranked in the conference going in, we knew we would need some special performances because those places don't hold when the day is done. We trailed midway through but kept chipping away and had enough depth to get it done again." The Doane women scored 167 points on the day and out distanced second place Concordia by 12 points. The Bulldogs scores 155 points. Nebraska Wesleyan was third with 106 points. The Tiger men scored 207.5 points on the day and outdistanced second place Concordia by 53.5 points. The Bulldogs scored 154 points. Nebraska Wesleyan was third with 133 points. Concordia's Charista Zehnder was named the Female Outstanding Athlete-of-the-Meet, and the 2009 GPAC Outdoor Women's Track and Field Athlete-of-the-Year, scoring 31.5 points for the Bulldogs. Individually Zehnder placed second in the 100, 200, and Long Jump. In the triple jump she placed sixth. She was also on the winning 4x400 and second place 4x100 relays. Doane's Virgil Mitchell was named the Male Outstanding Athlete-of-the-Meet, and the 2009 GPAC Outdoor Women's Track and Field Athlete-of-the-Year, scoring 22.5 points for the Tigers. Mitchell individually won the 110 hurdles and 400. He was also on the winning Tiger 4x400 relay.
