![]() Hastings Wins GPAC Softball Tournament
Despite both teams knowing that they would be advancing to Decatur, Alabama, and the NAIA National Softball Championship in a few days; Hastings and Morningside finished the 2009 GPAC Softball Tournament strong with two Championship games on Saturday at the SYA Softball Complex in Sioux City, Iowa. When the dust had settled the fourth seeded Broncos defeated top seed Morningside in the second title game and claimed the league postseason title with a 4-1 win. Hastings is now 34-15 and Morningside sits at 33-19 with both teams earning GPAC automatic berths to the NAIA National Championship.
Saturday play started with Morningside forcing a second championship game by winning the first title game 3-0. In Championship Game #1 the Mustangs, the GPAC regular season champions, rallied behind Kelly Baumert four-hit shutout effort to pick up the win. She twirled only one walk and totaled seven strikeouts to improve her season's record to 23-10. The Mustangs took the lead right from the start when they plated two runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Mustangs would add the third and final run in the second inning. Morningside scattered nine hits in the win. In Championship Game #2 Bronco ace pitcher Chelsey Woodside tamed the Mustangs on seven hits in the 4-1 win. Woodside, who had a tremendous tournament, finally gave up her first run after she had thrown shutouts in her two previous tournament starts. Woodside struck out three and didn't walk a batter. She had allowed only three hits and struck out 16 batters in 13 tournament innings prior to the contest. Stephanie Baltazor paced the Broncos' offensive attack with a double and triple. Ann Hutson went three-for-three with a double to lead the Mustangs. Baumert allowed 11 hits in defeat. She struck out six and didn't walk a batter. The NAIA Softball National Championship will feature 32 teams this year and will be played in Decatur, Alabama, May 14-20, at the Wilson Morgan Softball Complex.
