Dakota Wesleyan's women shot a final round total of 341 and claimed the 2008-2009 Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Women's Golf Championship in Orange City, Iowa, on Friday at the Landsmeer Golf Club. The Tigers, with the win, earned the league's first automatic berth to the NAIA Women's Golf National Championship next month in Rapid City, South Dakota. The Tigers four round total was 1359. The University of Sioux Falls held off a surging Northwestern squad and claimed second place and the second automatic berth to the national meet. The NAIA awards leagues with 10 or more women's teams two bids.
 
The Cougars 72 hole total was 1428, shooting third place round of 355. Northwestern, who hosted today's fourth and final 18 hole round, finished third overall and second on the day with a total of 1448. The Red Raiders shot a round of 352 on Friday.

The 2008-2009 GPAC Women's Golfer-of-the-Year and medalist is Danielle Bellet from Dakota Wesleyan. Bellet led wire to wire over 72 holes and finished with a four round total of 326 to win by seven strokes. Bellet placed first in the final qualifier with a round of 83. She also won qualifier number one at Whispering Creek in Sioux City, Iowa, last fall with a course record round of 74. Jenny Andrew from Hastings College, who won qualifier number two and three at Hastings (Lochland) and Midland Lutheran (Fremont Country Club) respectively, placed third overall with a 72 hole total of 339. Dakota Wesleyan's Kelli Basely ended as the runner-up medalist with a four round total of 333. Basely shot an 86 on Friday and tied for third with Jenny Bowen from Morningside. There was a seven way tie for second at the Landsmeer Golf Club in the fourth qualifier.

2008-2009 was the first year that the GPAC used four individual 18 hole qualifiers and 72 holes to determine the league champion and national tournament qualifiers. Morningside (Whispering Creek), Hastings (Lochland), Midland Lutheran (Fremont Country Club), and Northwestern (Landsmeer) hosted qualifiers this season.

The top ten finishers that played in all four qualifiers are automatically earn GPAC All-Conference honors, five additional at-large players will be named to the team along with the GPAC Coach-of-the-Year. These honors will be released in the next two weeks.

The 2009 NAIA Women's National Golf Championships will be played May 12-15 at the Meadowbrook Municipal Golf Course in Rapid City, Iowa.

The fourth and final GPAC Men's Golf Qualifier will be played on Tuesday in Sioux City, Iowa, at the Whispering Creek Golf Course. Dakota Wesleyan is the team leader in the men's competition after 54 holes.
