![]() DWU Ends Season With 25 Wins Dakota Wesleyan University and Grand View University had to wait until the final game of the two-day first round to open NAIA Division II Men's Basketball National Tournament play, and after regulation ended in a 78-78 tie, they had to wait even longer to find out who would advance to the Sweet 16.
Grand View used last-second heroics to force overtime, and it capitalized with a 90-84 overtime win as the Vikings stayed hot from the floor in the extra five minutes, and the Tigers went ice cold to lost a first-round tournament game for the third-straight season. DWU's seasons ends at 25-9. The Vikings improve to 25-8 and will face No. 1 Oklahoma Wesleyan in Friday's second round at 9:15 p.m. The Vikings surged ahead early in overtime, 86-81, thanks to back-to-back 3-pointers by reserve forward Greg Schulz. From there, the Vikings were able to add some points from the free throw line as the Tigers misfired on their final five shots. The teams traded the one-point lead four times in the final three minutes of regulation before Brady Wiebe got a 3-point play inside and then found Ike Muoneke for a layup on the next possession to put DWU up 78-74 with less than a minute to play. However, Corey Viet scored inside, Tiger forward Scott Nelson missed a pair of free throws and Grant Burns hit a step-back jumper with less than three seconds to play to tie the score at 78-78. Grand View actually had a chance to win at the buzzer as Viet stole the inbounds pass, but misfired on a 12-foot jumper as time expired. Grand View was lead by three 20-point scorers. Viet scored 29, Schulz added 27 and Burns scored 20 to lead the Vikings, who shot 51.6 percent from the floor and 52 percent from the 3-point arc. DWU was led by sophomore forward Wiebe's 26 points and 11 rebounds, Ike Muoneke scored 19, Nelson added 12 points and 11 boards and Chase Walder also scored 12 points. Grand View took a 43-36 lead into the locker room after the first 20 minutes thanks to some incredibly hot shooting. The Vikings shot nearly 60 percent from both the floor, including a 7-for-12 clip from behind the 3-point arc. GVU turned a six-point lead into a 14-point margin at 39-25, with an 8-0 run late in the half. The surge was keyed by five straight points by forward Cory Viet. However, the Tigers got their fast break going to whittle the lead to seven by halftime. Rocky Nelson made a 3-point play on a run out, Mitch Bain scored in transition and Brady Wiebe got a put back to give DWU some momentum at the break. That momentum carried over into the opening minutes of the second half. Scott Nelson drilled back-to-back 3-pointers and Wiebe added a pair of free throws to put the Tigers ahead, 44-43. It was Dakota Wesleyan's first lead since 3-2. Grand View responded with a run to push its lead back to double digits. Schulz scored on a put back, hit two 3-pointers and sank two free throws to key an 11-2 run by the Vikings, who took a 61-51 lead with 10 minutes to play. The GVU lead hovered around 10 until the five-minute mark when DWU went on a remarkable run. Chase Walder hit a 3-pointer, Ike Muoneke made a 3-point play, Nelson hit a three in the corner and Wiebe scored inside to give the Tigers an 11-0 run and a 71-70 lead with 3:23 left to set up the thrilling conclusion. Free throw shooting hurt DWU again, as the Tigers were just 11-for-23 from the line for 47.8 percent. Grand View was 13-for-20 from the line for 65 percent. DWU held a slim edge on the boards (39-38) and the turnover category (16-17). The loss marked the final game for DWU seniors Scott Nelson, Ike Muoneke and Colby Fitzgerald, who was out with a knee injury. All three were All-Conference performers during their careers, and they led the Tigers to a 49-18 record and two National Tournament berths in their two seasons at DWU.
