The Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) and Hauff Mid-America Sports are proud to announce the following women's and men's indoor track & field athletes-of-the-week for February 2 - February 8, 2009. Hauff Mid-America Sports is the presenting sponsor of the 2008-2009 GPAC players-of-the-week and players and coaches-of-the-year awards program.
Hauff Mid-America Sports/GPAC Women's Indoor Track & Field Athletes-of-the-Week
Field Events Jamie Williams, Hastings Hastings' Jamie Williams is the field athlete-of-the-week. Williams, a senior from Cedar Bluffs, Nebraska, placed first in the weight throw and shot put at the Nebraska Wesleyan Tri-Meet last Friday. In the weight throw measurement of 51-08.25 was a personal best and is the top mark in the GPAC. Her throw 39-07 in the shot put was a season best. Williams has automatically qualified for the NAIA Nationals in the weight throw. Track Events
Jackie Spelts, Nebraska Wesleyan Nebraska Wesleyan's Jackie Spelts is the track athlete-of-the-week. Spelts, a junior from Burwell, Nebraska, set a school record in the 5,000 with a time of 17:19.57 at the Nebraska Frank Sevigne Invite at the Devaney Center. The time broke the school mark by 15 seconds. The mark ranks her third in NCAA Division III this season. Hauff Mid-America Sports/GPAC Men's Indoor Track & Field Athletes-of-the-Week Field Events Brad Gamble, Hastings Hastings' Brad Gamble is the field athlete-of-the-week. Gamble, a senior from Eagle, Nebraska, won the high jump and placed second in the long jump at the Nebraska Wesleyan Tri-Meet. In the high jump he cleared 6-7 which ranks second in the GPAC and sixth in the country. He also placed third in the 55 meter hurdles and was on a winning 4x400 team that ran a season best 3:28.6. Virgil Mitchell, Doane and Michael Saalfeld, Concordia Doane's Virgil Mitchell and Concordia's Michael Saalfeld are the track athletes-of-the-week. Mitchell, a sophomore from Omaha, Nebraska, and Saalfeld, a senior from David City, Nebraska, each posted top NAIA marks over the weekend. Mitchell ran a time of 8.07 in the 60 meter hurdles which is the best mark in the NAIA and sets a new Doane school record. Saalfeld clocked a time of 1:51.83 in the 800 meters which is also the best in the NAIA and sets a new Concordia school record. Mitchell ran at the USD Bill Hillenbrand Invite, while Saalfeld participated in the Nebraska Frank Sevigne Invite Indoor Track and Field Meets This Week Saturday, February 14
