![]() GPAC Cross Country Championships The 2008 Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Cross Country Championships are this Saturday, November 8, in Hastings, Nebraska. The meet, hosted by Hastings College, will be run at the Elks Country Club with the women's 5K race starting at 10:30 AM and the men's 8K race to follow at 11:15 AM. All 13 GPAC schools will participate in the event which will feature approximately 100 runners per race.
Nebraska Wesleyan will look to defend their 2007 conference titles in both the women's and men's division. Last year the Prairie Wolf women scored 45 points in claiming the team title, with Concordia placing second with 77 points. On the men's side Nebraska Wesleyan totaled 29 points last fall and placed first ahead of second place Concordia who totaled 49 points. The 2007 GPAC Championships were hosted by Doane College. Two new individual champions will be crowned this year. On the women's side Olivia Johnson from Northwestern was the 2007 individual medalist with a time of 18:07.93. Johnson, a Milford, Iowa, native, transferred to Marquette this past summer after her standout freshman season with the Red Raiders. Chris Dunker from Nebraska Wesleyan was the men's medalist last year with a clocking of 25:45.23. Dunker graduated this past spring after a standout career at Nebraska Wesleyan. The Prairie Wolf women have won or tied for the league title five times since the conference was formed in 2000. Concordia has won or shared three titles in that same time frame. Nebraska Wesleyan's men have won seven of the eight GPAC Championships since the league was formed in 2000. Concordia's men won the 2004 event. 2006 men's individual champion Luka Thor returns to the meet this year after an injury last fall. The junior from Lincoln has had a solid fall season so far for the Bulldogs. The top two teams from each race (excluding Nebraska Wesleyan who participates in NCAA DIII for postseason) will advance to the NAIA National Cross Country Championships in Kenosha, Wisconsin, on Saturday, November 22. The top seven individual runners outside those two teams will also advance, provided they place 20th or better in the meet.
